How to Pray’  (Part 2)

(Please click on the audio link: http://proxy.autopod.ca/podcasts/chum/6/15489/good_news_068_sept01.mp3  for far greater detail.)

This week, we look again, at the only place in the Gospels where somebody asks Jesus to teach them to pray, other than the version in Matthew. But for the purpose of today's message, we will focus on the version in Luke:  (Luke11: 1-4)

Luke 11:1-4   [English Standard Version Anglicised (ESVUK)]

The Lord's Prayer

11 Now Jesus[a] was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.” And he said to them, “When you pray, say:
“Father, hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come.
Give us each day our daily bread,[b]
and forgive us our sins,
for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us.
And lead us not into temptation.”

Footnotes:
  1. Luke 11:1 Greek he
  2. Luke 11:3 Or our bread for tomorrow

Opening question: the disciple asks Jesus, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.” In Verse 2:   “And he said to them, ‘When you pray, say: “Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come.’ ”…

Here is the ‘take-away’:

Dad, or Father/ God, will reveal himself as God in all his uniqueness and in all His glory.

Jesus went to the Cross to die for our sins, that we might be redeemed and purified through His blood. In doing so, we are adopted by God as His children through grace, (not of our doing).

How do we know this? Because Jesus, on His way to the Cross, told us how to pray to God as our Father: (through His adoption and grace).

Jesus gives me/us a new identity and a new destiny.
I am holy.
I am made, and I am redeemed to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever.

Friends, please give yourself to Jesus. Submit to Him.
Learn to pray as he teaches us.

Let’s pray:

Dear God, please grow in me a humble, trusting knowledge of the greatness of Jesus, to make me holy and to make me your child by adoption and grace.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
