‘The Significance of Christmas’

The Bible says: 15 So it was, when the angels had gone away from them into heaven, that the shepherds said to one another, “Let us now go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us.” 16 And they came with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the Babe lying in a manger. 17 Now when they had seen Him, they made [a]widely known the saying which was told them concerning this Child. 18 And all those who heard it marveled at those things which were told them by the shepherds. 19 But Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart. 20 Then the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told them.
21 And when eight days were completed [b]for the circumcision of the Child, His name was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before He was conceived in the womb.
 "  - Luke 2:15-21 (NKJV)

NOTES:

Jesus saves us by transforming our lives.

"He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?" - John 14:9b - (NKJV)

Jesus is the mirror of what we should be and can become, through Him.

We need make only one New Year's Resolution:

To borrow from St. Francis...

"To see Christ more clearly,
To love Him more dearly,
To follow Him more nearly."

Before us lies the pilgrimage of discipleship:

"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."
- Philippians 4:13  -(NKJV)

Will you pray with me?

Heavenly Father, we are grateful for your word and deeds that reveal your love and saving purpose to us.

We are thankful that you save us by transforming our lives.

We also appreciate your invitation to devote ourselves to you in worship and obedience.
Thank you Father.  Amen

- Dr. Allen Churchill

This week's broadcast is the sermon I gave at Church of the Messiah.
The sermon was called "Jesus Bore My Curse"
It is part of my series, "The Crucified Messiah"

"Jesus Bore My Curse"

Today’s Reading: Galatians 3:10-14  (ESV)

The Righteous Shall Live by Faith

10 For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them.” 11 Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law, for “The righteous shall live by faith.”[a] 12 But the law is not of faith, rather “The one who does them shall live by them.” 13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”— 14 so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit[b] through faith.

SERMON NOTES:

The Crucified Messiah

Jesus Bore My Curse

Galatians 3:10-14

1) In the world, curses flow from hatred and a lust for power.

2) For the Triune God, His “curse” is spoken out of His great, great love for you and His desire to bless you.

3) The Bible warns you that pursuing religion or spirituality is like peddling down a hill thinking it is the way to the top of the hill.

IMAGE 1:

4) The Triune God broke into the real world, to do for you what you could never do for yourself. This is offered to you as an unmerited and humbling gift.

5) Jesus offers to trade places with you. On Him, all that shames, diminishes, and punishes you; and all that you have done to deserve that shame, diminishment, and punishment. On you, His sinless, loving, sacrificial, risen life of union with the Living God.

IMAGE 2:

6) In Christ Jesus, every curse against you is swallowed up in life and blessing that is real today and continues into eternity.

The Resurrection of Christ

15 Now I would remind you, brothers,[a] of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain.

For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me. For I am the least of the apostles, unworthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me. 11 Whether then it was I or they, so we preach and so you believed.
