'Choose Holiness'
This is a shortened
version of a sermon I gave at the church I serve in, Church of the Messiah,
Ottawa. It was part of a series of sermons on First Thessalonians 5: 9-24,
called Practical Discipleship. If you are interested in a longer version of
this sermon, or the other sermons in the series, you can go to www.messiahchurch.ca.
This
week’s talk is an exposition of First Thessalonians
5: 22. The text according to the English Standard Version is short but
powerful, "Abstain from every form of evil"
1. The
knowledge of good and evil is present in every culture and confused in every
culture.
2. Evil is not a mere opinion. It
is a power and it has dominion.
3. God is good and His very nature
is the source of all goodness in the physical, spiritual, intellectual,
emotional, social and moral realms.
4. Only God can break the power
and dominion of evil. He did this in the death of Jesus for us.
5. When I become Christ's own, I
come under the power and dominion of "the good", so I seek to draw
closer to Jesus and abstain from evil.
6. Faith in Jesus is: turning to
Him; inviting Him into Your life as the Saviour and Lord; giving Him permission
to be the Saviour and Lord of every nook and cranny of who you are.
Let’s pray:
Father, thank you for
Jesus, thank you for the cross, thank you that you don’t reveal evil just to
condemn us, but to point us to Jesus. Thank you for His death upon the cross
for us. Thank you for His mighty resurrection. Father, please make us disciples,
gripped by the Gospel, living for your glory.
