PART 1:  SANCTIFIED ANGER--NEEDS TO BE CHANNELED
PART 2:  SUDDEN ANGER--NEED TO BE CONTROLLED
PART 3:  SLOW ANGER--NEEDS TO BE CONDEMNED
PART 4:  SPIRIT-CONTROLLED ANGER

PART 1:  SANCTIFIED ANGER

*  ARE ALL FORMS OF ANGER EVIL?  NO--JESUS WAS ANGRY:

·        Jesus acted out His anger when He drove the moneychangers out of the temple courts. He did this because they had made God's house a marketplace; they had cheated people and prevented them from worshiping God (see Matt. 21:12).
      (http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=matthew%2021:12&version=NIV)

·        He became angry with the Pharisees because of their heartlessness. They wanted Him to keep the rules they had made for the Sabbath, and they had no compassion for the man with the shriveled hand whom Jesus healed (see Mark 3:5).
      (http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=mark%203:5&version=NIV)

·        Jesus was very indignant when the disciples tried to prevent people from bringing children to Him (see Mark 10:14).

*  KEY:  JESUS WAS ANGRY ABOUT INJUSTICE, RELIGIOUS HYPOCRISY, SIN; HE DISPLAYED RIGHTEOUS ANGER

*  Winston Churchill "A man is about as big as the things that make him angry."

*  Moses exhibited righteous indignation when he came down from Mount Sinai after forty days of talking with God and receiving his holy law. At the foot of the mountain, he found the Israelites in a wild orgy, dancing around a golden calf. He smashed the two tablets of stone to the ground, shattering them as powerfully as their laws had been shattered by the people's rebellion. God did not rebuke him for that.

(NIV)  JAMES 1:19  "My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, 20 because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires. ...  26 Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless.”

PART 2:  SUDDEN ANGER

*  THE TEMPERAMENT OF THIS TYPE OF PERSON:  "HOT UNDER THE COLLAR", "SHORT FUSE", "BAD TEMPER", "EASILY OFFENDED"

*  EXTERNALIZE ANGER---->VIOLENCE, ANGRY WORDS

2008 MENTAL HEALTH FOUNDATION OF BRITAIN ("BOILING POINT" ARTICLE)

·        Almost a third of people polled (32%) say they have a close friend or family member who has trouble controlling their anger.
·        More than one in ten (12%) say that they have trouble controlling their own anger.
·        More than one in four (28%) say that they worry about how angry they sometimes feel.
·        One in five people (20%) say that they have ended a relationship or friendship with someone because of how they behaved when angry.
·        64% agree that people in general are getting angrier.
·        Fewer than one in seven (13%) of those people who say they have trouble controlling their anger have sought help for anger problems.

*  A lady once came to Billy Sunday and tried to rationalize her angry outbursts. “There’s nothing wrong with losing my temper,” She said, “I blow up, and then it’s all over.” So does a shotgun,” Sunday replied, “and look at the damage it leaves
behind!”

·        PROVERBS 15:18  A hot-tempered person stirs up conflict, but the one  who is patient calms a quarrel.”

·         PROVERBS 29:22  “One given to anger stirs up strife, and the hothead  causes much transgression.

·        PROVERBS 14:29  “A patient man has great understanding, but a quick-tempered man displays folly.”

·        PROVERBS 29:11 (NRSV)
             “A fool gives full vent to anger,
              but the wise quietly holds it back.

*  But forty years later, Moses' rash, impatient anger exploded in rage, and he disobeyed God and struck a rock twice with his staff instead of speaking to it as God had commanded. For this display of anger, Moses was rebuked by God and forbidden to enter the Promised Land.

PART 3:  SLOW ANGER

*  THIS TYPE OF PERSON INTERNALIZES ANGER--->ON THE SURFACE, PERSON LOOKS FINE; AND PEOPLE MIGHT SAY, "HE OR SHE NEVER GETS ANGRY"!

*  ADJECTIVES:  SARCASTIC, CYNICAL, CONDESCENDING, BITTER, GOSSIP

*  (NRSV) EPHESIANS 4:31  "31Put away from you all bitterness and wrath and anger and wrangling and slander, together with all malice, 32and be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ has forgiven you."

*  DON'T LET ANGER FESTER!

EPHESIANS 4:26  "Do not let the sun go down on your wrath"

*  MARK TWAIN:  Anger is an acid that can do more harm to the vessel in which it is stored than to anything on which it is poured.--BITTERNESS IS LIKE DRINKING POISON AND EXPECTING THE OTHER PERSON TO DIE!

PART 4:  SPIRIT-CONTROLLED ANGER

*  EPHESIANS 4:26  "Be angry, and do not sin"

*  THIS IS POSSIBLE FOR THE CHRISTIAN

*  (AMPLIFIED)  PROVERBS 31:26  "She opens her mouth in skillful and godly Wisdom, and on her tongue is the law of kindness [giving counsel and instruction]."

*  (NRSV) Proverbs 8: 6-8
"6 Hear, for I will speak noble things,
   and from my lips will come what is right;
7 for my mouth will utter truth;
   wickedness is an abomination to my lips.
8 All the words of my mouth are righteous;
   there is nothing twisted or crooked in them.
9 They are all straight to one who understands
   and right to those who find knowledge."

*  YOU NEED TO BE BORN AGAIN AND FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT

*  EPHESIANS 5:18  "BE FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT" -- CONTINUOUS VERB!

GALATIANS 5 (NIV)  13 ...the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”[b] 15 If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.16 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever[c] you want. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.  19 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.  22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,23 gentleness and self-control.”

THE KEY:  CONTROLLING ANGER---NOT LETTING ANGER CONTROL YOU!
Proverbs 25:28, (ESV). “A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls.”
Proverbs 17:27, (ESV). “Whoever restrains his words has knowledge, and he who has a cool spirit is a man of understanding.”
Proverbs 16:32, (ESV).  “Whoever is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city.”

PRACTICAL TIPS:

1.  E-MAILS ARE NO GOOD!
2.  FACE-TO-FACE IS BEST; PHONE SECOND BEST
3.  BATHE SITUATIONS IN PRAYER--WE PRAY NOT TO CHANGE  GOD'S MIND, BUT TO GOD CHANGE US!
4.  BE BRUTALLY HONEST WITH GOD; ASK FOR HIS LOVE TO FILL YOU!
5.  DON'T DRAG UP THE PAST
6.  IF YOU INTERNALIZE; GET A JOURNAL
7.  GUARD YOUR EYES AND EARS--WHAT GOES IN, COMES OUT!

JAMES 1: 21 Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil    that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.”

A study found that between 1993 and 2001, incidents of physical violence increased by 378 per cent. TV shows in 2001 averaged 40 acts of violence per hour.Overall, 87.9 per cent of all violent acts appear before 9 p.m., and 39 per cent air before 8 p.m. -- at a time when children are likely to be watching.

CONCLUSION:  "One who is slow to anger is better than the mighty; one who rules his spirit, than he who takes a city." Proverbs 16:32
