This weeks broadcast is a shortened version of a sermon I gave at Church of the Messiah. The original sermon was called "Eternal Life." It is part of my series, "Knowing Jesus: John's Intimate Biography."

Should We Call God "Father"?

Today’s Reading:  John 17:1-5 (ESV)
The High Priestly Prayer

17 When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you, since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do. And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed.

1.       It is because God is personal that you cannot invent ways to address Him.
2.      If living an impersonal life is to be avoided, why do you want to live with an impersonal god?
3.      If you look down on a person who always needs to be praised, how can you look up to a god who always needs to be praised?
4.      If knowing a person changes you, how much more must knowing the personal God?
5.      If knowing a wonderful person feels like a gift, how much more must it be a real and true gift to know God?

“This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” John 17:3 ESV
