‘Lukewarm?’ -A talk on Revelation 3: 14-20
Dear friends, I preached a longer
version of this talk in my church. It was part of a series of sermons on the
Book of revelation entitled, "Following the Lamb in the dying days of the
dragon".
Read Revelation
3: 14-22
The Message to Laodicea
14 “And
to the angel of the church in Laodicea write: The words of the Amen, the
faithful and true witness, the origin[a] of God’s creation:
15 “I
know your works; you are neither cold nor hot. I wish that you were either cold
or hot. 16 So, because you are
lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I am about to spit you out of my mouth. 17 For you say, ‘I am rich, I have prospered, and I
need nothing.’ You do not realize that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind,
and naked. 18 Therefore I counsel
you to buy from me gold refined by fire so that you may be rich; and white
robes to clothe you and to keep the shame of your nakedness from being seen;
and salve to anoint your eyes so that you may see. 19 I reprove and discipline those whom I love. Be
earnest, therefore, and repent. 20 Listen!
I am standing at the door, knocking; if you hear my voice and open the door, I
will come in to you and eat with you, and you with me. 21 To the one who conquers I will give a place with
me on my throne, just as I myself conquered and sat down with my Father on his
throne. 22 Let anyone who has an
ear listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches.”
Footnotes:
a.
Revelation 3:14 Or beginning
1. If all I care about is: what
to eat, what to wear, what to own, and who to sleep with - then I will never be
interested in, or understand Jesus.
2. In Jesus, the living God is
both keeping His word, and proving He is keeping His word.
What does it mean to be lukewarm?
I believe I am self-sufficient; I deceive myself; I am disinterested in God and
the things that matter to God.
3. Sloth is spiritually deadly.
Being lukewarm is spiritually deadly.
4. The question I need to ask
myself is: Am I spiritually lukewarm? Am I living the sin of sloth?
5. One door has been opened. One
door needs to be opened. I need to open the door into my life and invite Jesus
in as Saviour and Lord. He is always open to me.
Let’s pray:
Father, Thank you so much for Jesus. Thank you that He is the
Amen, the faithful witness, the beginning. Thank you Father that he both
promised in his earthly life that he was going to die on the cross and rise
again, and that he not only promised that, he atually did it. He died on the
cross for us and He rose again, triumphant over sin and death and all hostile spiritual
powers.
Thank you, Father, for His mighty resurrection. Thank you,
Father, that you have kept your word. We thank you that Jesus will keep His
word, to allow us to come into him when we put our faith and trust in him and
that He will come and live within us as our Saviour and Lord.
Father, help us to be gripped by the Gospel, so that we will be
disciples, living for your glory.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
