Dear friends, this radio talk is a shortened version of a sermon I gave at Church of the Messiah, Ottawa. The sermon was part of a series of Sermons on the first 11 chapters of Genesis. The series was called, God: The Creator And Sustainer Of All Things.

God and Noah and The Flood

Genesis 6  (ESV)

Increasing Corruption on Earth

6 When man began to multiply on the face of the land and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that the daughters of man were attractive. And they took as their wives any they chose. Then the Lord said, “My Spirit shall not abide in[a] man forever, for he is flesh: his days shall be 120 years.” The Nephilim[b] were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of man and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men who were of old, the men of renown.
The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And the Lord regretted that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart. So the Lord said, “I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens, for I am sorry that I have made them.” But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.

Noah and the Flood

These are the generations of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his generation. Noah walked with God. 10 And Noah had three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
11 Now the earth was corrupt in God's sight, and the earth was filled with violence. 12 And God saw the earth, and behold, it was corrupt, for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth. 13 And God said to Noah, “I have determined to make an end of all flesh,[c] for the earth is filled with violence through them. Behold, I will destroy them with the earth. 14 Make yourself an ark of gopher wood.[d] Make rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and out with pitch. 15 This is how you are to make it: the length of the ark 300 cubits,[e] its breadth 50 cubits, and its height 30 cubits. 16 Make a roof[f] for the ark, and finish it to a cubit above, and set the door of the ark in its side. Make it with lower, second, and third decks. 17 For behold, I will bring a flood of waters upon the earth to destroy all flesh in which is the breath of life under heaven. Everything that is on the earth shall die. 18 But I will establish my covenant with you, and you shall come into the ark, you, your sons, your wife, and your sons' wives with you. 19 And of every living thing of all flesh, you shall bring two of every sort into the ark to keep them alive with you. They shall be male and female. 20 Of the birds according to their kinds, and of the animals according to their kinds, of every creeping thing of the ground, according to its kind, two of every sort shall come in to you to keep them alive. 21 Also take with you every sort of food that is eaten, and store it up. It shall serve as food for you and for them.” 22 Noah did this; he did all that God commanded him.

Footnotes:
1.       Genesis 6:3 Or My Spirit shall not contend with
2.      Genesis 6:4 Or giants
3.      Genesis 6:13 Hebrew The end of all flesh has come before me
4.      Genesis 6:14 An unknown kind of tree; transliterated from Hebrew
5.      Genesis 6:15 A cubit was about 18 inches or 45 centimeters
6.      Genesis 6:16 Or skylight

NOTES:

1.       Before The Flood - the earth has become Mordor! (i.e.: a ‘land of shadow’; Ref: J.R.R.Tolkien)
2.      The gods of our imagination kill ordinary people. The real God died for ordinary people
3.      Before The Flood - the “normal” has become deeply and tragically evil.
4.      God says, “You have wanted ruin, ruin you shall have.”
5.      The Flood: the big God, does a big miracle, which is believably historical.
6.      In most miracles, as the “laws of nature” flow on, God creates something new in His creation, AND/OR, He removes something out of His creation.
7.      With The Flood, God first reverses, then re-creates, His creation.
8.     God’s grace nurtures our obedience - human obedience does not produce grace.
9.      God keeps His warnings and His promises.
10.  At best, we humans want an Ark. But God loves us truly. He provided Jesus Christ crucified.
11.  Heavenly Father, please pour out the Holy Spirit upon us, and make us disciples of Jesus gripped by the Gospel, living a long obedience in the same direction, as we live for Your glory. In Jesus’ name, AMEN.

Broadcast Notes:

First, a shout out to a couple that their financial donation allowed this show to be aired, today. Our thanks to Piebe and Maryke Dejong for your generous gift!

Dear friends, this radio talk is a shortened version of a sermon I gave at Church of the Messiah, Ottawa. The sermon was part of a series of Sermons on the first 11 chapters of Genesis. The series was called, God: The Creator And Sustainer Of All Things.

The Presence of Hope
During the Reign of Death

Prayer:
Father, please pour out your Holy Spirit upon us as we read your Word. Lead us to Jesus. Lead us to yourself. And we ask this in Jesus’ name. AMEN.

Scripture Refrence:

Adam's Descendants to Noah

This is the book of the generations of Adam. When God created man, he made him in the likeness of God. Male and female he created them, and he blessed them and named them Man[a] when they were created. When Adam had lived 130 years, he fathered a son in his own likeness, after his image, and named him Seth. The days of Adam after he fathered Seth were 800 years; and he had other sons and daughters. Thus all the days that Adam lived were 930 years, and he died.

Footnotes:

1.       Genesis 5:2 Hebrew adam
______________________________

Notes:
    1. Adam sought to begin the reign of humans, but he launched the reign of death.
    2. Even though death reigns, there is hope. Human beings are still made in the image of God.
    3. Even though death reigns, there is hope. God wants us to call out to Him for rest and relief.
    4. God stymied death for Enoch. Jesus Christ defeated death.
    5. God stymied death for Enoch. Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection dealt with your sin and mine.
    6. Only Enoch benefited from his deliverance. The benefits of Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection were always meant to be given to all who asked with humble faith.
    7. Enoch’s deliverance gave a glimmer of hope. The resurrection of Jesus Christ is God’s vindication of the person and work of Jesus as humanity’s true hope.
    8. “For I am not ashamed of the Gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes....” Romans 1:16
    9. Father in Heaven, please pour out the Holy Spirit upon me, and make me a disciple of Jesus gripped by the Gospel, living with hope as I live for Your glory. In Jesus Name, AMEN.
