Weakness?’

It is an honour to be able to open the Bible with you and talk about Jesus.  Please pray for me and for all who will hear this talk.

Please take a moment to get your Bible. I will be reading from the English Standard Version. My talk today is a shortened version of a sermon that I did at my church. It was part of a series of sermons in which I preach through the Book of Revelation. The series is entitled, "Following the Lamb in the dying days of the dragon."

Please read Revelation 3:7- 13:

Revelation3:7-13  - English Standard Version (ESV)

To the Church in Philadelphia

“And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: ‘The words of the holy one, the true one, who has the key of David, who opens and no one will shut, who shuts and no one opens.

“‘I know your works. Behold, I have set before you an open door, which no one is able to shut. I know that you have but little power, and yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name. Behold, I will make those of the synagogue of Satan who say that they are Jews and are not, but lie—behold, I will make them come and bow down before your feet, and they will learn that I have loved you. 10 Because you have kept my word about patient endurance, I will keep you from the hour of trial that is coming on the whole world, to try those who dwell on the earth. 11 I am coming soon. Hold fast what you have, so that no one may seize your crown. 12 The one who conquers, I will make him a pillar in the temple of my God. Never shall he go out of it, and I will write on him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which comes down from my God out of heaven, and my own new name. 13 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’

We will be challenged to pray into four areas where we need to keep God's Word written.

1. Jesus, please help me to keep Your Word that You alone open the door to Your Kingdom and to Heaven.

2. Jesus, please help me to keep Your Word that You are present when I am weak and in great difficulty or danger.

3. Jesus, please help me to keep Your Word that You alone will bring history to an end when You come again.

4. Jesus, please help me to keep Your Word that You alone have the power and the authority to name me with an eternal name that reveals my identity and my destiny.

Friends, when you come to Jesus, and give your life to Him, he gives you a new name, a new identity and a new destiny. And because of his death and his resurrection: that is completely and utterly certain …and we can grow into it!

Let’s Pray:

Father, Please make us disciples, so gripped by the Gospel, we will bring you glory, in Jesus’ name, Amen.

To the Church in Sardis

3 “And to the angel of the church in Sardis write: ‘The words of him who has the seven spirits of God and the seven stars.
“‘I know your works. You have the reputation of being alive, but you are dead. Wake up, and strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have not found your works complete in the sight of my God. Remember, then, what you received and heard. Keep it, and repent. If you will not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what hour I will come against you. Yet you have still a few names in Sardis, people who have not soiled their garments, and they will walk with me in white, for they are worthy. The one who conquers will be clothed thus in white garments, and I will never blot his name out of the book of life. I will confess his name before my Father and before his angels. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’

1. The people's and the church's concern with reputation and appearances was killing it.

2. When we live to deceive, we also deceive ourselves.

3. The Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit speak to us as "one" with words everyone can understand and act on.

4. Will the world form us or will the Word form us?

5. The same word that convicts of sin is the word that saves.

That’s why I said that the Bible isn’t written to stop a conversation, but to start a conversation: and honest conversation with God.

That God, who knows every single thing there is to know about me, every single thing there is to know about you; still, He loves us, still He loves you, and would willingly send his Son to die upon the Cross, so that we could be reconciled with the Father.

Friend, if you have not yet done it, there is no greater thing that you can do than, to right now, just turn to Jesus and ask Him to be your Saviour and Lord.

And for the rest of us who have already made such a decision, pray that God would make you a disciple, gripped by the Gospel to bring glory to God.

Let’s pray:

Father, Draw us to yourself. Draw people who are far from you to yourself. People who hear this, may they come to a saving faith in Jesus.
Those who already know Jesus, may they be gripped by the Gospel and live to bring you glory.
